Taiping Orchid Society Show Judging Notes

Show Judging Notes
1. No judge shall judge a class in which he / she has exhibit.
2. There should be a minimum of 5 judges performing their duty at any one time. Should there be any abstention the judges from the panel must stand in to make up the minimum requirement of 5 judges.
3. The judging will be intuitive or subjective in nature; that is what the judges like best and agree to be awarded.
3.1 Dismiss from consideration all exhibits which are clearly inferior, then compare and consider those remain. Due consideration should be given to:

  • perfection and beauty of blooms
  • The presentation
  • Colour
  • Rarity or difficulty in cultivation

3.2 The appreciation system of judging should be used.

4. There should ne no 'class within a class judging'

5. Under the guidence of the team leader, judges may have a brief discussion of the plants exhibited in the class they judge, before voting is carried out.

6. All judges, including the team leader carry one vote only, It is recommended that the team leader cast his / her vote last.

7. Unnamed, unknown or incorrectly named plants will be disqualified for judging. They are accepted for exhibition only.

8. Stakes or wires, if used, must be unobtrusive(not too noticeable), must not touch any part of any flower, and must not extend beyond the first flower on any spray. However, for flower spike which is soft and more than 50cm in length, one extra tying is allowed. Excessive staking like the use of wires or copper wires in such manner as those used to train bonsai is not allowed.

9. Judges are asked not to award prizes to unworthy entries. Do not award prizes to dirty and diseased plants or plants in dirty pots.

10. A new plant should not have an advantage merely because it is new, but should be judged on its merits.

11. After judging a section, kindly select one plant or species which the judging panel considered it worthy of contesting for the main prizes.

12. Other than the above, the Rules and Regulations of the Show must be referred.

Quotes:

  • Open your mind and eyes, learn to see, learn to understand what you see, be positive and see what is beautiful about everything, rather than only what you like.
  • Learn both sides of the judging process - from your own point of view and from other judges perspective as well.
  • Avoid looking for the spot on the flower or any flaw before we can see its overall beauty, see its beauty first, learn to appreciate beauty.
